#3 The Division of Joy
PANEL 1
At the chalkboard, Mr. Matheson teaches the class. The board shows an equation: LOVE ÷ CONFLICT = CHAOS!
MR. MATHESON
Division is all about splitting things apart.
PANEL 2
A student raises their hand.
STUDENT
My brother says you can't divide by zero, but if you do a wormhole will open up and send you to another dimension where they'll make you do math until you die.
PANEL 3
Mr. Matheson puts his hand on the student's shoulder.
MR. MATHESON
Don't worry. The only thing dividing by zero causes is existential dread.
PANEL 4
The student stares at Mr. Matheson blankly.
MR. MATHESON
Anywho... Back to math!

“The Division of Joy” – Mr. Matheson’s Arithme-TIPS for October 30, 2024

One of my favorite things about doing this strip is getting to reach into my toolbox to pull out some of my favorite characters from across all the Everly Heights stories. This comic includes Jerome Bentley, the bully who torments Ricky Special in our animated sitcom pilot Very Special (voiced by Sean Weiland). While Jerome plays the bully in Very Special, he's really a big softy at heart, which is sort of a spoiler for Very Special. This is one of my favorite comics from the first batch of comics, and the one I shared in our Discord server a couple days back. I like it so much because it juxtaposes Mr. Matheson's optimistic attitude with the darkness underneath, which we'll start digging into more in a couple weeks. Tomorrow, more school shenanigans.

Latch on to learning!
